Welcome

Welcome to Pack 124!

We are excited you and your son have decided to join our Pack.  This page is intended to give you some information to help you understand just what is going on and how your son can get the most out of this year.  Pack 124 has Cub Scouts from Lions (Kindergarten) up to Arrow of Light (5th grade).

Some terminology to know:

  • Pack – includes all scouts registered with Pack 124
  • Dens – groups of boys based on grade level/age (Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo, Arrow of Light)
  • Cub Scout – every boy
  • Lion – Kindergarten
  • Tiger – 1st grader
  • Wolf – 2nd grader
  • Bear – 3rd grader
  • Webelo I – 4th grader
  • Arrow of Light – 5th grader who will transition to Boy Scouts in May.
  • Cub Master – leader who runs all Pack activities
  • Den Leader – leader who runs each Den activities
  • Committee Chair – leader who runs each committee meeting
  • Committee  – parents, den leaders, Cub Master who plan activities for the year

For information on our meetings and events…see our Activities Page.

We believe the uniform is a very important part of scouting.  It helps the boys feel they belong to the den and the pack.  There is a special pride that comes with putting on a uniform.  The sooner you can get your son his shirt the better!  Even if all the patches are not sewn on let him wear it…he will smile and encourage you to sew faster! See the Uniform Page for more information.

Every Cub Scout must earn his Bobcat Badge no matter at what grade he joins.  This badge is a badge of knowledge and understanding of Cub Scouts.  To earn it they learn the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, the Cub Scout sign and handshake and a few more things.

Your son belongs to a certain den based on his age/grade. While he is in this grade he can earn that rank.  Ex. If he joins as a 3rd grader he will earn his Bear.  He cannot go back and earn the Tiger or the Wolf.  If he joins in 4th grade he can earn his Webelo badge.  However he cannot go back and earn the Tiger, Wolf, or Bear.

This year your son will earn his Bobcat (if not already earned) and the badge for his den/rank  if he accomplishes all the activities.

There are many other things he can earn along the way:

Belt loops/pins.  This is a list of sports and academics that your son might enjoy and he can explore a little deeper and be recognized for.  If you work on one or more of these your son will really enjoy wearing them with pride and he will get more things awarded to him during pack meetings (they always like being recognized and called up!).  If he participates in a sport, you can pretty much guarantee he earns a belt loop if not the pin.  Look over the list, there are probably many you can earn even in a night/week.

Cub Scouts also has a program called “God and Me” which is a religious program that allows for a deeper study of your religion.  Almost all religions are available and if you are interested let us know and we will help you get the study information to do with your son.

We could go on and on about all the things your son can earn…that is part of what scouting is all about…encouraging your son to explore new things and recognizing his accomplishment in doing so! Read through your son’s handbook and ask us about anything that interests you and we will help you.  You can also go to www.scouting.org and find out more information about scouting in general.

Our Pack is led by parent volunteers.  We can not survive without parents!  Please feel free to help, voice your opinion and attend any committee meeting.  You are valuable.  The Cub Scout “Law of the Pack” says that the “Pack helps the Cub Scout Grow.”  The committee meeting is where we plan activities to help your son do just that.  Grow!

Thank you for the privilege of leading your son.  We are honored to have him with us.

We are here to help you, as much as we can, make this a great year for your son.  Please contact us with any questions or ideas you have.  If you have concerns let us know of them as well.

Cub Scouts is designed to bring the family closer together as you work with your son to achieve a desired goal.  We have found it to be very effective in our homes; we hope you have the same experience.
